MERENGUE DRIP | 2022

Andrea Aias is a multidisciplinary creative from Panama City, Panama. She studied interior design at Savannah College of Art And Design and painting at the Pratt Institute in New York. In 2011, she moved back to her hometown where she opened her art atelier. Since, Andrea has been creating and reinventing herself non-stop.

Her artistic expression is characterized by the exploration of textures and materials, dealing with concepts of dualities and contrasts, reflecting the core of the artist’s personality. Andrea invites the spectator to experience and share her emotions, frustrations and internal conversations portrayed on her artwork by trying to awaken a curiosity based on the sense of touch.

Welcome to the world of Spanglish, where the sprinkles are actually micro plastic trash that decorates your tropical beaches. Where cakes are not cakes, and the Swiss meringue has gone to shit.
I come from a childhood where I was hypnotized by Lisa Frank and rainbow packaging. Where I beg stores and their brands to make me fall in love, and put stars in my eyes with their products.
I love the package design for Skittles, but I throw away its contents. I love meringues, with their elegance and dynamic geometry, but sugar not so much.
I have been able to find refuge in a ritual that brings me back to my childhood days, to play with kitchen utensils without having to cook, appreciating the tranquility that the simple warm gesture of a freshly baked meringue can bring me, with all its imperfection and the fragility of its ephemeral materiality.
My world is a place where you can find art and objects created with the purpose of being merely beautiful or with a distinctive Panamanian phrase, and around the corner there is a piece that will surprise you with the depth of a cliff to press the most vulnerable parts of you, with a dash of curiosity, rebelliousness, and feminism.
I enjoy the process of exploring new techniques and mixing all kinds of elements to see what comes out. My hands are constantly playing catch up with all the ideas in my head, since my design education pushed me to develop concepts in more than one plane, swapping back and forth between two and three dimensions, to achieve more than one perspective.
Nobody is just one thing; we all change every single day. And even if you feel like this website is like watching a boiling sancocho full of many different elements, I can guarantee that those things, even if diverse and contradictory at times, are all me.
