An intuitive urge to create has driven her since childhood. This urge and her eye for details led her to the studio of a goldsmith. Besides learning technical skills for jewellery making, this was the place that gave space to her creativity, as if in alchemical manner, she could experiment endlessly.
She experienced a similar kind of creative freedom while studying material design at the art academy. By researching and documenting the specific properties and beauty of metals, she began to look differently at conventional uses. Her material experiments became jewels, small works of art.
Carmen is mesmerized by the allure of traditional jewellery. She approaches her work with an homage to the old craft, combining this with knowledge obtained from material research and experimentation. Besides her use of unusual materials, allowing and even embracing coincidence in her work is a key element. It gives her work the exceptionality that sets her apart from others.
One of her Objects of Obsession collections, Enduring, is based on the intrinsic qualities of material and their visual appeal. At face value, one will mostly see the shining glare that refracts from the multifaceted surface. On a deeper layer, the surface leads the way to the complex inner workings. In some cases, it's complemented by a faceted stone.
Carmen uses materials to create unique pieces of jewellery that catch the eye and have a timeless appearance.
