Dian Chen graduated from MA Jewellery Design in Central Saint Martins UAL, and is now working as an independent jewellery artist and designer in London. She uses conceptual jewellery and other body-linked objects as her primary media to explore the role of jewellery in the body-outside dynamic world relationship.

Materialising bold imaginations, she gives a thoughtful debate around the topics of post-humanism, feminism, LGBTQ movements, identity and gender equality. In 2017, she established her own brand – Ddesign with a vision of combining conceptual jewellery with business publicity. In 2019, her graduation project “Queer Beard & Cyborg Rainbow” was acquired by CSM Museum for permanent collection.

In this collection, Chen combines repurposed industrial materials such as aluminium, plastic and rubber tubes with fallen tree branches that she has collected during dog walks during the past two years. She doesn’t draw graphics before she puts them together, so sometimes the piece was more determined by the shape of the mass-produced industrial materials, and sometimes, it was more determined by the shape of the tree branches.

For Dian, it is a practice of speculative fabulation, a way of storytelling nearby beings and things in her life, a vibrancy of her memories and imagination. She wants the encounters to lead her and the dialogues to fill her.
