Erika just completed her Masters in Art Administration at Kutztown University and is serving as the Gallery Director at Peters Valley School of Craft in Layton, NJ. Her work has been shown in various exhibitions in the United States and she has sold her work in venues such as the American Craft Council Baltimore Craft Show and Smithsonian Craft Fashion + Home, among others. Cluster Craft Fair 2024 will be her first time exhibiting work internationally.

Erika Hewston is a fiber artist born and raised in Reading, Pennsylvania.  While she has been exploring fibers nearly all her life, her interest in weaving was sparked in her senior year of high school when she experienced tapestry weaving for the first time.  Two years later, when she transferred to Kutztown University of Pennsylvania, this passion was ignited further when she discovered floor loom weaving.  It was in her senior year of undergrad that she began honing her style of color gradients which are now a prominent feature in both her wearable and tapestry weavings.

I have been drawn to textile craft for as long as I can remember; before I knew anything of the art and craft world, before I learned about the honor and skill required to call oneself a craftsman, before building a mutual respect for the materials and the process. Working with and learning all these things only enlivened my passion more.

PYROMANIA ‘HOT & COLD’ WALLHANGING

For me, making is about finding peace and getting away from the stress and worries of the world. I strive to create beautiful and captivating pieces that can provide such an escape for the viewers and wearers of my work. To enable someone to step back from the hostility they face on a daily basis and become immersed in something as simple, and pleasing, as an aesthetically beautiful, finely crafted, piece of art.

RASPBERRY LEMONADE COWL

My handwoven scarves and ties are all made of cotton, bamboo rayon, and tencel to ensure a soft product with beautiful drape. My wall pieces are a mixture of any fibrous materials I can gather within the desired color range: cotton, fleece, felt, twine, tule, acrylic, burlap, and others. This vast array of materials allows me to create pieces that are immersed in texture creating both a visual and tactile exploration for the viewer.
