GETTING TO KNOW:
ELODIE LASCAR
Hi Elodie!
Congratulations on being shortlisted
for the Cluster Illustration Residency 2021
How would you introduce yourself to the Cluster readers?
I’m a French Illustrator based in Marseille.
How did you get here on your creative journey?
I studied Illustration at the art school in Strasbourg.
Before that I studied art history for a year in college!
What drew you to illustration?
I’ve been drawing since I was a kid.
What really led me to Illustration was my passion
for Comic Books, even though I got into them quite late they became a source of inspiration
for my future creative work.
Tell us about the work you submitted…
I presented a new series of drawings in oil pastel.
The inspiration for this collection came from pictures of my family.
How would you describe
your creative style and way of working?
It’s not easy to describe but I’d say shadows and light
are core elements in my drawings, and the female
form is also a recurring subject. I take inspiration
from everyday practices like reading, watching movies, taking pictures, and then I just sit in my office and draw.
Key words to define your imagery?
To borrow from the lyrics of Serge Gainsbourg...
Sea, Sex and Sun!
What gets you out of bed in the morning?
A coffee on a sunny terrasse.
Social media and you: the good, the bad and the ugly. Tell us all…
I only use Instagram to post drawings and I only follow artists that I like.
Sometimes Ig is a good way to find work, but otherwise I just feel like I’m wasting my time scrolling away!
Who are your idols?
Grâce Jones.
What’s on your creative calendar for the near future?
I’d like to make a Comic Book.
Personal motto/mantra?
All that matters is now.
Tips, tricks and secrets for making it in the art world?
Work hard, be curious, try to enjoy it, don’t make anything to please other people - unless it’s for loads and loads of money!
Thank you for reading,
