INBAR AVNERI
Cluster Contemporary Jewellery Exhibitor | December 2024
Inbar Avneri was born in 1993 in a small kibbutz in northern Israel. From a young age, she immersed herself in art, dancing and painting. As an adult, she studied for a B.A. in jewellery design at Shankar. Her jewellery is created without initial planning, emerging from a playful exploration of materials and shapes. After graduating from Shankar, she moved to Tel Aviv, where she began working as a goldsmith for a well-known jewellery brand in Israel, and she is now the production manager there.
Inspired by Jorge Luis Borges' Book of Imaginary Beings, my creative process began as a study of animal characters in folklore throughout history. Motivated by these stories, I sketched imaginary animals, which then evolved into three-dimensional metal creatures. I chose to focus on animals because, for me, they represent possibilities—options for fulfillment, escape, and change. Multifaceted and unpredictable, animals help us understand the world. They can explain various natural phenomena and are often attributed with picturesque, eccentric qualities that we would not dare associate with ourselves.
In my spare time, I draw animals or imaginary creatures, using these sketches as inspiration for my jewellery. I observe the shapes and lines I’ve drawn, then begin to experiment with the metal. I never know exactly what the outcome will be. I create pieces that come together like a puzzle with no single solution, piece by piece. Everything is crafted by hand, including the soldering of the metal and its finishing. Finally, I send the completed jewellery for plating and set the stones myself.
