SOO HYUN CHOU
Cluster Contemporary Jewellery Exhibitors | December 2024
Soohyun studied metalworking and design as an undergraduate in Seoul. After completing her MFA in 2014, she established her own studio, where she works as an artist specialising in contemporary metalwork and jewellery.
Soohyun Chou was born in Seoul, South Korea. Influenced by her grandmother, a craftsman of hanbok, the traditional Korean dress, she developed a love for making and drawing from a young age. Watching her grandmother create hanbok, Soohyun was captivated by the transformation of a flat piece of cloth into a three-dimensional object that could be worn on the body. She found it particularly fascinating that an artistic creation could be completed only when it merged with the human form, which eventually led to her interest in jewellery during her studies in metalwork.
Soohyun Chou's work begins with her deep interest in human beings. As we navigate life, we are shaped by various influences—our environment, experiences, thoughts, and emotions—building our unique identities and accumulating personal stories over time. Through her creations, Soohyun seeks to celebrate the individuality of each person and honour the grandeur of existence, which is shaped and enriched over a lifetime.

To represent the unique history of each individual, Soohyun developed the modulated form casting process. She arranges modulated intaglio molds in varied stacks to form embossed figures, which are then cast in a mold. This technique symbolises the individuality of a person, shaped by the accumulation of distinct experiences and histories.
