SOPHIE BÉLANGER
Cluster Contemporary Jewellery Exhibitor | December 2024
Sophie Bélanger, known as SOFI, is recognised for her colourful, playful jewellery. Born in Quebec City, Canada, in 1979, she completed her DEC in arts and crafts in 2001. She then worked in various jewellery stores and ran her own workshop for several years. Alongside her jewellery practice, Sophie also painted and drew, eventually integrating these mediums into her work.
In 2016, her career took a significant turn when she joined the filière 11 collective, where she discovered contemporary jewellery. Initially inspired by street and political art, she gradually developed her own style. Her work has since been deeply influenced by the experience of being close to her son, who suffers from a rare degenerative disease. Through her jewellery, Sophie aims to provoke reflection on themes of happiness, hardship, and grief. Since then, she has participated in several group exhibitions, both nationally and internationally.
First, I’d like to discuss the source of my motivation and inspiration to better explain my artistic approach. Fifteen years ago, I became the parent of a child suffering from an exceptionally rare degenerative disease, which led to severe disability. This pivotal moment significantly changed the course of my life.
The challenges I faced became a source of inspiration, prompting me to reflect on our relationship with happiness in the face of adversity. Through the use of humour, I aim to encourage the audience to reconsider their perception of life. By felting and juxtaposing coloured fibres, I create metaphors that contribute to the story of each piece. Through my work, I strive to immerse the public in a playful universe where colour is ever-present. By wearing one of my pieces, you help spread happiness.
